Eye Examinations

IMPORTANCE OF EYE EXAMS

At the office of Dr. Rigney Eye Care and Eyewear, patients receive full eye exams and eye checkups based on their medical history. Patients who have previously experienced eye problems should expect a full eye exam. Patients who have not experienced eye problems in the past and who do not suffer contributing diseases like diabetes usually receive an eye checkup. Eye examinations can take anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes, while a typical eye checkup takes about 30 minutes. Patients over 40 years old should have their eyes checked every 2–4 years, while patients under the age of 40 should have an eye checkup and exam every two years. However, if you work at a job that stresses the eyes or if you take medicines that can weaken the eyes, you should see your optometrist more often.

THE EYE EXAM

Before the exam, a technician will review your medical history and go over any concerns you have. Dr. Rigney will examine inside the eyes using an ophthalmoscope or with a slit lamp using a hand-held lens in front of the eye. These instruments allow our eye professionals to study structures, such as the retina and lens of the eye, where signs of eye allergies, conditions, and diseases can be found. We will also ask the patient to read letters off a chart, and may request digital photographs be taken of the interior and exterior of the eye. More tests will be necessary for patients ordering contact lenses to ensure the fitting is correct. For patients with specific eye problems, such as blurry vision, trouble reading or driving, nearsightedness or farsightedness, etc., additional tests may be required to pinpoint what is causing the symptoms so that an appropriate diagnosis and treatment plan can be provided.

ADDITIONAL TESTS

Depending on the unique vision needs and/or problems of the patient, the following tests or examinations may be included during a comprehensive eye exam:

  • Vision – Patients are normally tested for near vision, distance vision and intermediate vision.
  • Eye Movements – Your eye movement and eye coordination will be checked to ensure they are working together and no undue stress is being placed upon the eye muscle.
  • Visual Acuity Test – This test measures the sharpness of your vision. A projected eye chart helps measure the distance visual acuity and small hand-held charts help establish your near vision.
  • Color Blindness – Patients should expect a color vision test as part of an eye exam.
  • Ocular Motility Test – This test determines how well your eyes follow a moving object. Eye movement problems can affect your reading and athletic pursuits.
  • Stereopsis Test – Stereopsis testing describes the eye teaming that enables normal depth perception and appreciation of the 3-D nature of objects.
  • Refraction Test – This test is used to determine your precise eyeglass prescription. With Dr. Rigney’s in-house lab, most prescriptions can be filled onsite and in short order.
  • Glaucoma Test – If the optometrist believes glaucoma may be present and affecting your vision, he will order a glaucoma test. The OCT-Glaucoma or Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is used for imaging modality in the evaluation of glaucomatous damage.
