Early Symptoms of Macular Dystrophy

If you are looking for an optometrist in or near Bartlesville, you have come to the right place. We also have locations in Collinsville and Owasso. Dr. Jay Rigney of Dr. Rigney Vision is an expert when it comes to offering quality eye care and treating diseases of the eyes such as macular dystrophy. This eye disease can gradually develop and make it difficult to drive, read, and recognize faces.

Symptoms to Watch Out For

Early signs of macular degeneration result in slightly blurred vision both far and up close. You may notice that the center of vision appears shadowed or even fuzzy. You may also begin to notice blind spots. Straight lines may begin to appear wavy to you. Central vision loss can occur within days in particularly severe cases of macular dystrophy. Other symptoms of age-related macular degeneration include:

  • Visual field defect: The center vision may become distorted, lost, or smudged as the disease progresses. This can affect a person’s ability to watch TV, read, or even drive.
  • Contrast sensitivity: You may find it hard to see textures and subtle changes within your environment.
  • Poor tolerance for changing levels of light: It may be hard for your eyes to adjust while walking during sunset or even riving. Glares can make the problem worse.
  • Need for higher light levels: You may notice that brighter levels of light help you more while you are cooking, reading, and performing other daily tasks.
